A lack of system maintenance can cost you. On average, an inefficient heat pump could eat up to 10 to 25 percent more energy, based on findings from the U.S. Department of Energy. It’s also more likely to become damaged or fail prematurely.

Troubleshooting Your Heat Pump Problem

Heat pump not running right? Check out our list of common problems below.

  • No heat. Make sure your thermostat is positioned to “on” and “heat.” A circuit breaker may have tripped, but in some cases it’s because the thermostat itself doesn’t work with heat pumps.
  • Insufficient heat. Dirty filters, fan and coils may restrict airflow and wreck your system. Replace the system’s air filter every month or so, avoid letting the coils and fan get dirty, and remove yard debris that may have accumulated around it. Your system could also be dealing with clogged ductwork, damaged valves or poor refrigeration flow.
  • Cold air instead of heat. Heating that comes from a heat pump won’t be as warm as a standard, forced air type of furnace. But if things still feel too cold, switch the thermostat to emergency heat in addition to at least 5 degrees higher than the inside temperature. If you end up getting warm air, there might be something wrong with the outdoor unit. Cold air means there’s probably an issue with your thermostat or air handler. And in some cases, the problem is because your system has gone into defrost mode to avoid freezing. When you’ve noticed frost or ice on the outdoor coil, your unit may have a broken defroster timer or control module, or it could be low on refrigerant.
  • Heat pump starts and stops often. Change your air filter and keep an eye on your thermostat, as it might have to be recalibrated or it requires new batteries. When it’s cold and the heat pump is running constantly, the thermostat may be set too high. Also, certain heat pumps may struggle to work efficiently around 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Rattling, grinding or squealing sounds. If you hear a rattling sound, it might help to tighten the cover panels. But if you’ve heard noise you’d describe as scraping, grinding, squeaking or squealing, shut the system down and get in touch with Winnipeg Supply Service Experts. These sounds can point to a serious problem.
