Is Puron R410a Being Phased Out?

Your AC unit uses a chemical refrigerant to move warmth within your home outside. This makes your home chilled and comfortable. The model of refrigerant used in your Winnipeg house’s air conditioner has switched a few times as time has gone by, keeping up with innovative breakthroughs and environmental regards.

All modern home AC units in targetlocation run on R410a, also referred to as Puron. But this refrigerant will eventually no longer be made. This is due to a continued focus on restricting substances known to negatively impact the environment.

To learn the “why” behind cooling rules, it helps to put it into perspective. Two-thirds of the 128.5 million residences in the U.S. have air conditioning, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

But it’s not really the air conditioning system itself, or even its cooling performance.

The main issue is the refrigerant these systems has to make the comfort we enjoy.

Installed after 2010

If your equipment was installed after January 1, 2010, it probably uses R410a. And there’s an extended amount of time for you to get prepared for the phaseout. So, it’s not something you should be worried about during this time.

Strategies and schedules have been determined for commercial cooling units. But the starting point of the phaseout for residential cooling systems hasn’t yet been scheduled. However, the phaseout could commence around 2024 and take 10 years to end.

By that time, you may need to replace your unit anyhow, since the ordinary life cycle for an air conditioning system is usually 15 years.

Installed Before 2010

This compound isn’t being made at this time, but there are still many targetlocation residential cooling systems that use R22. If you have to get service, it can be very costly as only reacquired and recycled refrigerant is accessible.

Most of the time, we recommend getting a new your system because of the growing prices of keeping up a cooling system with R22. As a bonus, you’ll be gaining a more energy-efficient unit.

How Do I Find Out What Type Refrigerant My AC Uses?

If you’re not sure what type of refrigerant your AC has, you can locate its panel. This piece is typically located on the outdoor condenser. Or you can look in your owner’s manual.

If you’re unable to come across it, targetlocation residents should reach us at phone and our professionals can help.

Why are Refrigerants Hurtful to the Environment?

Older formulas of refrigerants can hurt the planet and contribute to climate change. Here’s a glance at the history of residential air conditioner refrigerants:

  • Residential air conditioners have used R22, or Freon, for many years. Scientists found it was harmful to the environment and ozone, so manufacturing permanently ended on January 1, 2020.
  • R410a is the alternative for R22. It’s what you’ll find in all new air conditioning systems today.
