7 Methods to Lower Your Heating Bill in Winnipeg Throughout the Winter

Your home is probably one of your most prized investments. It assists you financially through building equity, and it’s a space to enjoy with your family and create moments you’ll remember, too. During the winter, you may also be dealing with increased utility expenses.

As a consequence, finding methods to lower your heating bill in Winnipeg without lowering comfort can seem harder than it needs to be.

As far as energy efficiency, houses are like cars. Some guzzle energy while others sip it steadily. Regardless of what kind of residence you live in, there are ways to halt the cold this winter. The Experts are here with seven tips to keep your family warm without breaking the bank.

1. Replace Your Your Air Filter

It’s the most cost-effective suggestion out there. It’s also the best approach to keep your heater operating optimally throughout the winter.

The kind of filter and seasonal elements contribute to how often you should replace it. Increased allergen counts, pets and residence size may also influence its longevity. Generally, low-priced filters should be changed each month. Pleated ones made with denser material may make it three months or longer.

“It’s really the big thing folks forget about,” said Jim Hughes, senior manager of education and training at Service Experts. “The more loaded up the filter is, the less air is able to go through it and actually heat the residence. A clogged filter makes your heating system work harder.”

2. Schedule Annual HVAC Service

It’s standard to have an Expert come by your house in the spring for AC service. That way, your unit is prepped for the heat.

But don’t forget to schedule an appointment for furnace service before it snows too.

Among other actions, an inspection usually covers:

  • Checking thermostat settings
  • Cleaning and greasing internal parts
  • Inspecting system shutdown and startup controls

Regular service helps decrease the possibility of handling an emergency repair in the middle of a cold snap. Some reports have indicated as many as 75% of “no heat” calls could have been avoided with routine service.

3. Inspect Windows and Doors for Holes

Windows and doors are a primary entry point for chilly air. Insulating window and door frames is an economical approach to help keep cold air where it belongs.

Here’s one assessment that Hughes suggests.

Latch a door. Do you notice any light? If so, it’s not fully sealed. Changes or weather-stripping may be required.

If your home has single-pane windows, you might want to think over a dual-pane improvement.

Many homeowners insulate single-pane windows with plastic film.

It’s not a bad idea, but dual-pane windows provide superior insulation for keeping cold air out.

When you install double-pane windows, your energy savings could be 25% or better.

4. Regulate Use of Vented Appliances

If you need the exhaust fan during cooking, Hughes suggests against leaving it going for too long.

The same holds true for the dryer. Don’t let it to run after your clothes are done.

Any venting appliance or exhaust fan expels hot air away from your home and pulls in cold air. Operating these appliances all the time will force your furnace to run more often to take care of the unnecessary cold.

5. Examine Your Residence’s Edges for Leaks

Check your house’s exterior. This is the boundary that shields your home from the weather. If you have a basement, watch for moving cobwebs or chilly air flowing in close by the corners.

Polyurethane sealant and other options can be purchased to mend basement walls allowing air into your home. Another affordable move is to get foam seals for fixture undersides, such as ceiling fans, overhead lights or wall outlets.

They’re quick to use and are fantastic at blocking cold air in the winter.

6. Evaluate Insulation Levels in Your Attic

It’s worth making sure that you have thick enough insulation levels

Hughes advises visiting the ENERGY STAR® zone map to determine the appropriate R-value for your house’s walls and attic space. This recommendation is formulated on the geographic spot where you live.
