The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that gives financial support to those in the construction field who have life-altering injuries. Each year the association honors numerous recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, born in Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil endured a major stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and the stroke left his left leg severely impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors feared that he would most likely become restricted to a wheelchair.
Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their lone source of income, causing financial pressure on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that uses functional electrical stimulation to help someone in Adil’s situation walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila were not able to afford the apparatus in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be required so he could figure out how to use it.
Fortunately, an employee at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the generous grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
